Yonge, Charlotte Mary

Yonge, Charlotte Mary
(1823–1901)
   Novelist.
Yonge was born and lived throughout her life in a village near Winchester. John keble was her parish priest and, under his influence, she produced a series of novels recommending the High Anglican way of life. These include The Heir of Redclyffe (which is still read today), The Daisy Chain and Pillars of the House. She was also the editor of The Monthly Packet, an improving periodical for young women. She taught Sunday School for seventy-one years and is a remarkable example of an influential figure who led a very private and circumscribed life.
